Hiscocks Drive-in
HISCOCK'S -WELL KNOWN WEDGE FRIES
Hiscock's Drive-In has been in business for 48
years. It was started by Wallace and Flo Hiscock in June of '60. They bought a small building on main street, Windsor which
was originally a house and converted it into a candy store. Within two years it became a convenience store and soon needed
to expand The building was renovated and a kitchen was added to it for cooking hamburgers and homemade fries for the public. People loved the taste of homemade burgers and fries and the business grew successfu1ly .
In '70 Mr. Hiscock
attended a food fair convention in Toronto and was introduced to wedge fries. Wedge fries are lightly spiced battered
potatoes cut into shapes of wedge and pressure cooked until golden brown. Mr. Hiscock registered the trademark
for wedge fries and proceeded to manufacture them for wholesale. Wedgies as they became known was introduced
to the people of Grand Falls - Windsor. They were a big success, especially with the younger crowd and the students.
When students came home from university the first thing they would want was Hiscock's wedgies. Students began to ask if they
could freeze wedge fries and take them back.to university with them. Experiments were made and it was found that wedge fries
could indeed be frozen and later cooked when needed. That is how the frozen bags of wedge fries that you can now purchase
at any grocery store was discovered. They can be bought in bags, frozen and sealed , very much like any other frozen bags
of french fries.
Hiscock's wedge fries became known across the island and on the mainland. Mothers began to send
wedge fries to their children who lived on the mainland and care packages" to their children who were attending universities.
Hiscock's has catered to many specific groups such as players and coaches at the Irving Challenge Cup ,Atlantic Bantam
Hockey Championship. Wedge fries were also served to celebrities such as Tom Cochrane, Crash Test Dummies, Blue Rodeo and
many imported bands who played at the Exploits Valley Salmon festival during the last 21 years.
: Wedge
fries are still cooked and served with the same great taste as they were 36 years ago. Hiscock's drive-In is still located
at the same location as it was 48 years ago but now in a different building than when it started with a little house
as a building.
